#1 – Cube (Sister to Grid) (View 1) - Top Layer: Concrete. Middle Layer: Organic matter (planted underneath is a garden). Also found is my compost, eucalyptus leaves from my grandparent’s home, lavender and rosemary from my father’s garden, autumn leaves from Napa, California, iceplant from San Francisco beaches, discarded food from local supermarket. Bottom Layer: Topsoil from Petaluma, gardening soil from landscaper in Napa, river rock from Petaluma, bedrock from 70 feet down in San Francisco’s waterfront from my father’s seismic job. 3' x 2' x 2'. Napa, California. 2003. Description: This is what I imagine the cross-section of a sidewalk to look like. It is a eulogy for what has been lost when we paved the earth’s surface with concrete.
